Located in the top of the north, Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory.  According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2008 Darwin was the fastest growing capital city in Australia with 107,900 residents.  While the rest of Australia rugs up for the cooler winter months, the residents of Darwin revel in the sunshine and warmth as they enjoy temperatures in the low 30’s making it a great destination for tourists all year round.

Offering a rich history, Darwin has played a big part in forming Australia’s identity.  In 1942, Darwin came under attack from Japanese air raids.  Although there were attempts to warn of the attacks by a Coast watcher on Melville Island and a Priest on Bathurst Island, the warnings were thought to be sightings of US aircraft and were ignored, leaving 251 people dead and over 350 people injured.  Darwin now plays an integral part in the surveillance of Australia’s northern coastline.  Of course there are a variety of places to visit with an historical significance to the World War 11 Bombings.

Darwin then made world headline news again in 1974 when the city was hit by Cyclone Tracy.  The city was devastated on Christmas Eve leaving 71 people dead.  The damage to the city was estimated at $837 million and left over 20,000 people homeless.  The city was rebuilt, however a number of people that had evacuated to Sydney, Adelaide and other Australian cities, never returned.

Today, Darwin has so much to see, do and experience.  With the rebuild ensuring that buildings are more sturdy, the city is young and vibrant with an average age of its residents at a low 33.  Because of the desirable weather, a majority of the activities that you can experience in Darwin are outdoors, such as fishing and swimming.  You can base yourself in Darwin to enjoy day trips in your rental cars to Litchfield National Park, Adelaide River, Pine Creek or visit in and around Darwin Harbor for some fantastic scenery and a relaxing atmosphere.

With such a rich history, the art galleries and museums are places of interest to discover Darwin’s past and also display arts and crafts influenced by the Local Aboriginal Culture.

As Darwin is in close proximity to Asia, the number of Asian migrants is increasing, giving the city a real multicultural feel and allows visitors to taste cuisines from all over the world.  Of course the local seafood is also a popular cuisine and with pubs, restaurants and cafes to choose from, you are sure to find something to tickle your taste buds.  Darwin also has fantastic open air markets providing local arts and crafts and popular tasty dishes that locals enjoy every weekend.
