Darwin Airport has played a major role in the short rich history of Darwin.  Since 1919 flights have been arriving and departing into Darwin as the terminal in Parap services flights into Australia.  In the Second World War, the airport was bombed by the Japanese in frequent air raids, and it was also used by the Allies to defend Australia by air in the Pacific.  In 1945 the military base in Darwin allowed the use of the runways by civil aviation which saw the Parap Terminal close.  The airport was a stopover point for flights to Asia and then beyond to Europe in the 1950’s.  The decrease in traffic began with the introduction of longer range aircraft in the 1970’s.
