The Brisbane Airport site was announced in 1925 in the suburb of Eagle Farm. Qantas commenced flights into the airport in 1926. However, most flights were still landing at the other airport in Brisbane, Archerfield. During the Second World War the airport was upgraded by the United States armed forces to allow for military use. The standard was raised considerably and saw the airport being used for most civilian flights into Brisbane.
In 1988, just north of Eagle Farm, a new Airport was opened to cater for the tourist destination and the growth of the city. Now the Brisbane Airport is made up of two separate passenger terminals, the Domestic Terminal and the International Terminal, and one cargo terminal. There are 2 runways that service the airport.
Both the domestic and international terminals have modern facilities that offer eateries and gift shops to service your needs. The Domestic Terminal caters for travel within Australia and services travel routes from Qantas, Qantaslink, Jetstar and Virgin Blue. In 2008 renovations to the terminal began and include a new check in hall located on the top level as well as the much needed addition to the car park with construction to be completed by 2014. The International Terminal has four levels. Each level has a specific need making it easier to access whatever you may require. Level 1 is designated to the offices of airlines, baggage handlers and operators in the tourism industry. Arrivals are located on Level 2. Levels 3 and 4 are for Departures with the check in on Level 4 and the Departure Lounge on Level 3.
Today, Airport Drive is transforming into a hub and there are plans to create a unique experience for travelers in and around the airport terminals. With Discount Factory Shopping (DFO) available you can spend the last of your holiday cash before boarding your plane. You will also find the options of a bite to eat just as you land or just before you check in,with eateries near the DFO as well as in the terminal buildings.
Road works seem endless on Airport Drive and it would be best to expect delays when traveling to and from the airport. The current road works are expected to be finished in 2013 as the roads are being completely revamped to make accessing the terminals easier. You can also access Brisbane City and then the suburbs via the Airtrain, which is the railroad service that takes you into the heart of Brisbane and on to the Gold Coast if required.
With easy access to destinations throughout Brisbane in hire cars, make sure to organise your no hassle car hire through Webbcarr Car Rentals. Rental Cars are available directly from both terminals, giving you a quick start to your Brisbane experience.Click here to find depot addresses.
