The local Indigenous people, the Anangu people, choose not to climb the rock formation as it holds sacred meanings.  They also request others not to climb the natural wonder, as the track crosses over their very sacred Dreamtime Track.

The Anangu people provide tours around the base of the rock to emphasise the many significant sacred meanings that Uluru holds. Although they request you do not climb the rock or take pictures of some of the ancient rock paintings, people still choose to do so.  The Government is considering creating a policy that prohibits visitors climbing Uluru - Ayers Rock, to respect the beliefs and customs of the local Indigenous people.
